Inspectors from the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) at the Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” Customs Office have achieved yet another significant result in the fight against tobacco smuggling.
Specifically, during targeted inspections, they identified a Cuban passenger who had arrived in Athens via Turkey, carrying 43 kilograms of contraband cigars in his luggage.
The findings of the inspection:
- A total of 2,806 cigars of various brand names were counted.
- Their total taxable value amounts to 440,000 euros.
- The corresponding duties and taxes amount to 280,000 euros.
The passenger was immediately arrested and brought before the competent investigating magistrate, while the contraband goods were confiscated.
