In early 2027, the delivery of 255 ambulances that will join the EKAV fleet will begin , according to Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, who responded earlier today in Parliament to a topical question posed by KKE MP Vasilis Metaxas, regarding EKAV in Volos.
“The average age of EKAV ambulances is now much lower than it was ten years ago, and in 2026 and early 2027, we will begin receiving the 255 new ambulances we are acquiring through the Ministry of Civil Protection,” said the Minister of Health, noting: “This is the largest number of new ambulances EKAV has ever received. Delivery will take place in a few months, in early 2027, but by this time next year, EKAV will truly have a very new fleet; even as we speak, the average age is very low.”
KKE MP V. Metaxas referred to an incident that occurred a few days ago, when an EKAV ambulance, while transporting a 12-year-old child to Athens, caught fire while traveling on the National Highway. The crew’s quick reaction prevented a tragedy. In light of this incident, Mr. Metaxas stated that it is not an isolated case; there have been other such incidents in Magnesia, and they are the result of the government’s “criminal policy” in the health sector. The MP also raised the issue of the shortcomings in the capacity of the National Ambulance Service (EKAV).
Mr. Georgiadis informed the MP about the ongoing procedures for the recruitment of 258 DE-level ambulance crew members, four of whom will reinforce the Volos EKAV branch and eighteen the sectors of the Larissa EKAV branch. “I don’t recall ever before so many permanent staff positions being announced simultaneously at EKAV. We have opened approximately six hundred temporary positions and announced two hundred fifty-eight permanent ones. We are not indifferent to EKAV,” the Minister of Health assured.
