Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis referred to the new party named ELAS, which Alexis Tsipras announced yesterday, Tuesday, at the ygeiamou.gr conference, emphasizing that he respects all his political opponents and noting that the former prime minister has already been judged both during his time in government and as leader of the official opposition in the 2023 elections.
As he noted, it remains to be seen whether the new venture will be “SYRIZA with a new tax ID number or something different, ” adding that what he heard from the former prime minister amounts to “a spectacular plunge into the past.”
“What can I say about the name? I imagine the EAM left it to Mr. Polakis,” he commented on the name “ELAS – Greek Left Alliance” of Alexis Tsipras’s new party.
He described the opposition as fragmented, noting that “at this moment, the opposition is fragmented” and that “parties are being formed, there is great turmoil, especially on the Left, which has managed to become deeply divided beyond all expectations.” He also argued that there is “a common ground among these parties: ‘Mitsotakis must go and the government must fall,’” adding that “this does not constitute a political proposal.”
In contrast, he said that “the government has a plan that it is rolling out” and insisted on the slogan “We said it, we’re doing it,” noting that “the comparison will be reflected in the 2027 elections.” In the same vein, he noted that “citizens want a vision, and right now only the New Democracy party is providing it.”
Commenting, at the same time, on Maria Karistianou’s political presence, the prime minister emphasized that she will now be judged on her political positions, as is the case with everyone involved in political life.
He noted that she rose to prominence in the wake of the Tempi tragedy and subsequently chose to form a party, noting that she has reservations about arguments that portray the entire political system as corrupt and promote the notion that only certain individuals can “save the country.”
As he said, Greece has tried “self-appointed saviors” in the past without positive results. At the same time, he reiterated that he personally respects Maria Karistianou, noting, however, that from the moment she entered the political arena, she will be judged by the public based on her positions and proposals.
