A meeting was held today, Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the Ministry of National Defense Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias and Minister of Development Takis Theodorikakos, with the main focus on the progress of the “THORAX” program and cooperation in the fields of defense innovation and the defense industry.
During the meeting, they first discussed the progress of the “THORAX” program, which is funded by the Ministry of Development with €48.95 million from the Recovery Fund.
The program, for which the relevant contract was signed by the two ministers on March 24, 2025, constitutes a comprehensive information system to support decision-making by the Armed Forces and is part of the “Agenda 2030.”
Through the program, data is collected from all sensors operated by the relevant government agencies—such as radars, aerial and ground-based assets, UAVs, observation posts, and electronic means—which, after being categorized, prioritized, and processed using Artificial Intelligence, is transmitted to the appropriate agency, facilitating decision-making at the operational level.
In this way, information from the Armed Forces, Civil Protection, and the Coast Guard is gathered and evaluated in a combined manner to more effectively support the management of incidents related to national security.
Beyond addressing military threats, the program also contributes to countering hybrid threats—such as the activities of illegal migrant smuggling networks—as well as to the management of emergency situations.
During the meeting, the Minister of Development also provided an update on the new framework of the development law for the defense industry, aimed at strengthening the country’s productive and technological base.
Finally, the cooperation between the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Development on defense innovation was discussed, a field in which—as noted—significant new opportunities are emerging.
