Inspectors from the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE ) at the Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” Customs Office identified and seized a significant amount of cash that had not been declared upon entry into the country.
Specifically, during a routine inspection shortly before passengers exited the arrivals hall outside the Schengen zone (Extra Schengen), a passenger of Greek nationality, arriving from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, was identified. During the inspection of his carry-on luggage , the sum of 500,000 euros was found , in bundles of 500-euro banknotes, without the required electronic or handwritten declaration of cash on hand, as stipulated by the relevant legislation.
The funds were seized, and the procedures prescribed by law were initiated, while the case is being further investigated by the competent customs authorities.
AADE auditors maintain an intensive and continuous presence at the country’s entry and exit points, conducting regular and targeted inspections to prevent and combat violations in cross-border movements.
