The New Democracy party ’s proposal for constitutional revision was just submitted to Parliament. According to party sources, it is a roadmap with two objectives:
“The first objective is to modernize public life and the political system, addressing decades-old pathologies. The second goal is to pave the way for the major reforms our country needs as we move into the 21st century.”
The government majority’s proposal includes bold changes across all sectors, such as:
- the amendment of the article on ministerial responsibility,
- the appointment of judicial leadership with the involvement of the judges themselves,
- the protection of the country from any threat of bankruptcy,
- the protection of citizens from the imposition of retroactive taxes,
- linking tenure in the civil service to the evaluation of its employees.
It also provides for measures that are long overdue in society, such as:
- the possibility of establishing private universities,
- the extension of absentee voting to all voters
Finally, it looks to the future with provisions such as:
- to take measures to address the climate crisis, strengthening environmental protection,
- to recognize affordable housing as a state obligation,
- and to put Artificial Intelligence at the service of individual and social well-being.
As the Prime Minister stated in a post, “our goal is that by 2030—the year marking 200 years since the official establishment of our state—we will meet the future, guided by a modern Constitution.”
In this context, Kyriakos Mitsotakis called on all political forces to present their positions, rather than abstaining as they do today, and also urged every Greek man and woman to inform themselves about this institutional change, which ultimately affects all of our daily lives.
