By decision of Nikos Papathanasis, Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance, the project titled “Socio-Economic Transition of Western Macedonia – Phase 2,” with a total budget of 110 million euros.
This includes 18 individual projects (public infrastructure) in critical sectors such as education, health and social welfare, transportation, and energy conservation, with a significant developmental impact on the entire Region.
This decision launches the implementation process for the projects approved for Western Macedonia under Pillar III of the European Mechanism for Regions in Transition. Funding for these projects combines loans from the European Investment Bank (EIB) with grants from the EU budget and national resources.
This specific project addresses identified needs in the region and serves as yet another concrete example of support for Western Macedonia’s transition to a new and more modern development model.
The 18 projects included are:
1. Road connection between the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and the University of Western Macedonia with a grade-separated interchange on the Kozani-Ioannina National Highway
2. Improvement of the "Kozani–Airport" section of the Kozani–Larissa National Highway (EO3)
3. Improvement of the provincial road axis: Toichio Intersection – Vitsio Ski Resort – Florina Prefecture border
4. Improvement of the road section from Polykeraso to the Monastery of St. Anargyroi in Melissotopos
5. Upgrading of lighting at existing intersections in the Kastoria Regional Unit
6. Improvement of the Kaisareia–Aiani road section with the construction of a bridge at the “Hantakas” location
7. Redevelopment of the road leading to workers’ housing (Kardia settlement)
8. Redevelopment of public spaces along the main axis of Perdika
9. Improvement of the Ptolemaida–Asvestopetra road
10. Street lighting of the municipal road network in the Municipality of Nestorio to improve road safety and reduce operating costs
11. Construction of a new 10.6 km provincial road between Akrini and Kozani, in the area of the South Ptolemaida Mine, to serve the residents of the Akrini settlement
12. Improvement of the Nisi–Karpero Road (Venzia–Chasia)
13. Kastoria Police Cadet Division of the Police Academy
14. Water Supply, Sewerage, and Stormwater Drainage for the Municipality of Velvento
15. Improvement of the Kozani–Aiani Provincial Road Section (Kozani–Lefkovrysi Section)
16. Structural Reinforcement of the Old Wing and Outpatient Clinics and Upgrade of Building Infrastructure at the General Hospital of Kozani
17. Improvement and modernization of infrastructure and facilities at the General Hospital of Kastoria
18. Digital portal for the cultural heritage of Western Macedonia
