EKPOIZO has sent a formal notice to the insurance company NN Hellas, following complaints received from consumers regarding premium increases that took effect on June 1, 2026, ranging from 8.5% to 13%. More specifically, in recent letters, it has informed holders of long-term health insurance policies of new exorbitant annual increases. For example, for the “HOSPITAL PLUS HEALTH INSURANCE” hospital care plan, the premium increase is set at 9.50%, while for the "HEALTH SUPPLEMENTAL CARD" plan, it stands at 12%. For some policyholders turning 70, the increase reaches 30%.
In fact, to justify these increases, in its informational letter, NN Hellas, among other things, informs policyholders that: “in determining the adjustment of the annual premium, we take into account, among other factors, past annual changes in the hospitalization costs we have incurred, as well as the age of the entire insured population, in accordance with Joint Ministerial Decision No. 74.816/2025, published on September 30, 2025 (Government Gazette 5170/September 30, 2025, Issue B), for the preparation and calculation of the Annual Adjustment Index for Long-Term Health Insurance (E.D.A.)”.
EKPOIZO points out that the above standardized notice from NN Hellas constitutes a misleading and unfair commercial practice, given that the new index (EDA) it cites has not yet been published, even though it was supposed to have taken effect on January 1, 2026. Consequently, NN Hellas’s statement is false, as it claims in a non-transparent and misleading manner that the increase in premiums is based on an index that does not exist.
Consequently, the increases it is implementing are non-transparent, unfounded, illegal, and abusive, as they are based on a non-legislated index, which, moreover, is intended to put an end to the practice of non-transparent and exorbitant increases.
NN Hellas has absolutely no right to impose the above exorbitant increases. The general terms used by the company in the aforementioned contracts for premium adjustments have been definitively ruled abusive, confirming the fines imposed on it by the General Secretariat for Consumers (Decisions 1678/2023 and 1887/2022 of the Athens Administrative Court of Appeal).
It is clear that NN Hellas’s aim is to coerce, through blackmail, policyholders with long-term health insurance contracts to abandon them, thereby depriving them of the security of their benefits and the transparency that should govern premium adjustments. Furthermore, the aim is to appropriate, at the expense of consumers, the reserves that have been built up through long-term premium payments for their lifetime coverage.
It is no coincidence that in the final paragraph of its letters, it provocatively urges policyholders to “consider more economical alternatives” that supposedly “will reliably meet their own needs”!
We remind you that, since the beginning of 2026, EKPOIZO has sent a letter to the relevant ministries and supervisory authorities requesting their immediate intervention, so that the new index would take effect and eliminate arbitrary and abusive premium adjustments by insurance companies.
EKPOIZO calls on NN Hellas:
- To IMMEDIATELY retract its misleading informational letter and issue a new update to policyholders regarding premium adjustments for the 2026–2027 period.
- Refrain from imposing arbitrary premium increases until the publication of the new Annual Adjustment Index by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) and, in any case, any future premium increase must be justified based on objective and widely accessible indices, in accordance with the principles of good faith, as specified in case law.
- To comply with the above reasonable requests; otherwise, EKPOIZO will exercise all legal means to protect consumers.
The Independent Authority for Market Control and Consumer Protection, the relevant Ministries, ELSTAT, and the Bank of Greece:
- To intervene immediately to prevent the implementation of the impending increases that NN Hellas mentions in its letter to policyholders.
- To finally assume their responsibilities regarding the immediate publication of the new Annual Premium Adjustment Index by ELSTAT, for both whole life and term insurance policies.
- To enforce the law regarding the arbitrary and misleading practices of NN Hellas and other insurance companies.
- To conduct systematic inspections to ensure proper compliance with the law and, in particular, to eliminate unfair terms.
- To impose the administrative sanctions provided for by law.
Finally, EKPOIZO calls on consumers/policyholders to file a written complaint by filling out the template regarding increases in long-term policies on its website, here.
