Sklavenitis Supermarkets appears to be preparing to fill yet another “blank spot” on the map of organized retail. Sources familiar with the matter told Euro2day.gr that the chain is planning to enter Mykonos, an island where it currently has no presence.
According to the same sources, the expansion into the cosmopolitan Cycladic island is expected in the very near future. In fact, the group is reportedly already in the process of recruiting staff, a fact that reinforces the assessment that the plans are at an advanced stage.
However, sources close to the chain, contacted by Euro2day.gr, declined to confirm the information, noting that they do not comment on “future investment moves.” However, according to other sources, the most likely scenario is said to be entry through an acquisition.
The upcoming entry of the industry’s market leader into the “Island of the Winds” is particularly significant, as the Mykonos market is one of the most demanding and “closed” markets. High operating costs, limited available space, and the intense seasonal demands created by tourism make the venture particularly challenging. This is especially true in Ano Mera, which is the “Holy Grail” for the industry.
However, despite the high costs, the benefits are manifold. This is why, in recent years, there has been significant activity, with locations, chains, and stores changing hands. The best-known local brand is the Flora supermarket, part of whose network was acquired by MARKET IN.
Other local brands include: Vrisi Market Mykonos, ORNOS MARKET MON. IKE, Lykos Market Mykonos, Nikiforos Market, and others.
The most organized presence of a nationwide chain in Mykonos currently belongs to AB Vassilopoulos, while BAZAAR, OK! Markets, MyMarket Local, and others also have a presence there.
