Inspection teams from the Attica Region dealt another decisive blow to criminal networks that endanger public health, following the seizure of 5.3 tons of unfit meat that was being prepared for distribution to the market by a company based in the northern suburbs.
The case began with a report of a foodborne illness outbreak at a well-known restaurant in Penteli. The veterinary services of the Attica Region took immediate action and, through the traceability process for raw materials, identified a large meat processing and marketing facility in the Northern Sector of Athens, which had supplied the restaurant with the suspect materials.
During the subsequent inspections at that facility, serious violations were found regarding food safety, product traceability, storage and freezing conditions, as well as compliance with the required control systems.
As a result, more than 5.3 tons of animal products were seized, as they were deemed unfit for human consumption. The competent three-member committee thoroughly examined the case and decided to proceed with the seizure, as well as to impose the prescribed administrative sanctions and fines.
Inspections were immediately expanded to cover the entire distribution network of the company’s products. Teams from the Piraeus Veterinary Service proceeded with additional seizures of approximately 300 kilograms of products of animal origin, while the evidence gathered revealed that the company supplied both island regions and hotel establishments.
At the same time, as part of the cooperation between the competent authorities and the immediate activation of tracking mechanisms, an additional 500 kilograms of products linked to this case were seized in Chios, in order to complete the necessary inspections and fully ensure the protection of public health.
Following the findings of the inspections, the General Directorate of Agricultural Economy and Veterinary Medicine of the Attica Region recommended to EFET that the business’s operations be suspended.
Zero tolerance for those who jeopardize public health
Strictly adhering to the standing directive of Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias to protect consumers from adulteration, Regional authorities continue to conduct inspections with undiminished intensity across the entire food supply chain, demonstrating in practice that the protection of public health is a non-negotiable priority.
“The message is clear: no one can play with food safety and public health. The Region of Attica will continue to consistently and rigorously monitor every link in the chain, from production and processing to the consumer’s plate, so that citizens can feel safe about the products they consume,” stated Mr. Hardalias, adding: “We are not taking a step back. We are determined to put an end to any form of lawlessness and any practice that endangers the health of our fellow citizens. The recent seizures demonstrate on a daily basis that the inspections carried out by our services are substantive, targeted, and effective.
I would like to warmly thank the veterinarians, inspectors, and all the staff of the Attica Region’s services for their professionalism, perseverance, and dedication to the work of protecting public health. This effort will continue with even greater intensity and determination.”
