The pan-European initiative to highlight the cultural and tourism value of Europe’s tourist and museum railways (FEDECRAIL) is being led by Yannis Maniatis, Vice-President of the Group of European Socialists and Democrats and Head of the PASOK Eurogroup, following an invitation from the European Federation of Museum and Tourist Railways, within the framework of industrial and mobile heritage (WIMH).
At the meeting held on Friday, June 5, 2026, both in person and online, with the Association of Friends of the Railway, as well as with the Presidium of the European Federation of Museum and Tourist Railways, the efforts made so far by G. Maniatis to protect the Peloponnese railway network, as well as the Kalavryta Rack Railway, were analyzed.
It was agreed that G. Maniatis would take the initiative to mobilize his other European colleagues in the European Parliament, as well as to engage the two relevant European Commissioners, in order to take concrete measures to shape European policy for the protection, maintenance, and promotion of tourist and museum railway networks.
In addition to the executive committee of the Greek Association of Friends of the Railway, the meeting was also attended by the presidents of the corresponding organizations from the Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
