Cyprus will host the 3rd International Conference of the “Alexis Tsipras Institute” (INAT) will be held in Cyprus on June 17, with the theme “Conference on Peace and Social Justice in an Era of Multiple Crises,” in collaboration with the “Prometheus” Research Institute.
Among others, prominent figures will participate, such as Professor of Economics Thomas Piketty, the former Speaker of the House and former Minister of Defense of Chile, Maya Allende, Senator and former President of the Partido dos Trabalhadores, Humberto Costa, the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Egyptian House of Representatives and former Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, the Vice President of the Centre for International Relations, Matt Duss, the President of the CTP, Sila Usar Incirli, the Mayor of Nicosia, Charalambos Pruntzos, and the head of the Turkish Cypriot community in Nicosia, Mehmet Harmanci.
The Conference will conclude with remarks by AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou and Mr. Tsipras.
As highlighted by INAT, the annual International Conference has established itself as a rare opportunity for interaction among figures from around the world: from Europe and the Middle East to Brazil, and from China and Cuba to the United States. At the same time, it serves as a gathering of the broadest spectrum of progressive forces, ranging from European social democracy to the Latin American left and from the progressive and peace-loving movements of the Middle East to the Democratic Socialists of the United States.”
As noted, this year’s decision to hold the conference in Nicosia carries additional symbolic significance. At a time of multiple tensions and upheavals, when just a few months ago the security of Cyprus—an EU member state—was threatened, INAT and Prometheus are highlighting the need to resume talks for a fair and sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem, based on UN resolutions, by bringing representatives of the two communities— Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots.
