New Democracy is shifting into full-fledged election mode starting today, with the appointment of Konstantinos Kyranakis as Secretary of the party’s Political Committee. The meeting of the new Committee, formed following the recent party convention, is expected to have a significant political and organizational impact, with Kyriakos Mitsotakis declaring the start of what may be the most difficult pre-election campaign since he assumed leadership, with a third consecutive term in government at stake.
The prime minister will seek to highlight both the symbolism and the political substance of his decision to nominate the current Deputy Minister of Transport to the top of the party hierarchy. According to reports, he will present the new Secretary as a figure who combines renewal with continuity, as he is a young politician who has already proven himself in… difficult times.
Government officials believe that Mr. Kyranakis possesses both the internal party legitimacy and the political experience to contribute to the reorganization and dynamic relaunch of the party machinery ahead of the next election.
According to reports, the central focus of the Prime Minister’s speech will be the defense of the government’s work. He will emphasize that the reforms and changes implemented in recent years are neither easy nor self-evident, and he will call on party officials not to allow them to be downplayed or lost in the daily routine.
His argument will be based on the assessment that the country has made unprecedented strides in recent decades, with the result that many of these are now taken for granted by citizens. For this reason, he is expected to ask the members of the Political Executive to engage more actively with society, highlighting the results of government policies and strengthening the party’s connection with the public.
Patriotic character
A significant portion of Mr. Mitsotakis’s speech will also be devoted to the patriotic character of New Democracy, primarily as an indirect response to Antonis Samaras and his views on current foreign policy. At a time of heightened geopolitical turmoil, the prime minister is expected to link diplomacy, defense, and the economy to the government’s overall strategy for stability.
At the same time, he will outline the framework upon which the New Democracy party’s new government program for the next four years will be built.
The key priorities will focus on three pillars:
- Prosperity, with the goal of bringing Greece in line with developed European economies through increased incomes, further reductions in unemployment, and enhanced competitiveness.
- A Safe and Strong Greece, with an emphasis on the country’s deterrent power, its enhanced geopolitical role, and internal security.
- Institutional Renewal, with a focus on modernizing the state, digitizing services, and improving the functioning of institutions.
This framework is expected to form the basis of New Democracy’s policy commitments for the national elections, which it will reschedule for 2027.
At the same time, the prime minister will announce the launch of a nationwide campaign by the party, aimed at mobilizing party organizations and reconnecting with citizens who remain politically close to New Democracy but do not actively participate.
At the Maximos Mansion, they believe that this is precisely the major challenge for the coming period: revitalizing the party’s base and expanding the party’s influence among segments of society that are currently observing developments from a distance.
