George Gerapetritis described the European perspective of the Western Balkans as a strategic investment in peace and stability.
Speaking from Belgrade, the Greek foreign minister made it clear, however, that Athens will not accept any concessions on issues of the rule of law and international law.
“Greece continues to lead efforts to support the European integration of the Western Balkans, firmly believing that enlargement is a strategic investment in peace, security, and stability across the entire European continent,”Mr. Gerapetritis stated emphatically.
Responding to a question from ERTnews about why the accession of the Western Balkans has once again become a priority for Europe, the two foreign ministers highlighted the critical geopolitical conditions of the current era.
He then added that “we must understand that under these difficult conditions and in view of the implementation of the fundamental project of European strategic autonomy, I believe it is important to strengthen a new region, and especially a region that historically lies at the heart of Europe.”

At the same time, Marko Đurić, Serbia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated that “the accession of the Balkans is a geopolitical necessity; it is a historic decision that will strengthen Europe and remove Europe’s Achilles’ heel. And it will unleash the tremendous potential that exists in this region.”
The two men highlighted the importance of energy security and the role of the Vertical Corridor, while George Gerapetritis was received by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and the country’s Prime Minister, Đuro Mačut.
