Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met this morning at the Maximos Mansion with Panos Panay, Senior Vice President of Amazon.
During the meeting, Mr. Panay briefed the Prime Minister on the implementation of Amazon Web Services’ investment to create a new Local Zone in Athens, which will be generally available in July, according to the relevant announcement.
The new infrastructure will allow businesses and organizations operating in Greece to store and process data within the country’s borders, so they can meet local storage requirements, develop applications with extremely low latency, and leverage computing, storage, networking, and artificial intelligence services at the highest level of security.
The possibility of integrating the Greek language into Amazon’s ecosystem of devices and software was also discussed, with Mr. Panay noting that the Greek alphabet will be available to users of the Kindle and Alexa platforms in the future, in a way that reflects the natural use of the language without automation.
They also reviewed Amazon’s investments in Greece and explored further investment opportunities, with an emphasis on infrastructure for the Amazon Leo satellite internet service, green energy, and the development of cutting-edge research facilities.
In this context, the Prime Minister highlighted the exceptionally high caliber of the Greek workforce and Greek universities, which has contributed to the development of a dynamic startup ecosystem as well as the creation of research centers in many regions of the country
