Greece has signed on to participate in the European SAFE funding program, under which €700 million will be made available, according to Thomas Renier, the European Commission’s spokesperson on defense issues, Thomas Renier, emphasizing that the country is joining the European defense funding instrument.
As EU Commissioner for Defense and Space, Andrius Kubilius, had announced during the signing of the relevant agreement with Greece, “the agreement will help Greece strengthen its defense capabilities in the Mediterranean region through investments in strategic surveillance, secure communications, and drone countermeasures.”
Mr. Renier announced today that the countries that have already signed an agreement for SAFE include Poland, Lithuania, Croatia, Romania, Belgium, and Cyprus, while France is expected to sign tomorrow. “With France’s signature, another important phase of SAFE will be completed,” he said, emphasizing that work in the defense sector is progressing rapidly, something he described as “vital for supporting the EU’s defense industry.”
