"Partly due to the Greek government, we won’t know what we’re eating," MEP Nikolas Farantouris points out in a post, referring to a related proposal by the European Commission that was passed by the European Parliament.
As he states in his post, “PASOK voted against it. Unfortunately, however—and the Greek government bears some responsibility for this—we won’t know what we’re eating. The European Commission’s proposal to exempt genetically modified foods from being labeled as such on supermarket shelves has been approved! Those who voted in favor believe that, as long as there are no more than twenty genetic modifications, the food is not genetically modified and therefore does not need to be labeled as such! Unbelievable? And yet it’s true. And so they are depriving consumers of their right to know what they’re eating.
We are defending the plates of Greek and European citizens. This time, the lobbies won. A battle has been lost. But the war continues.”
