The Greek insurance market posted strong growth rates during the first four months of 2026, with total premium income exceeding 2.1 billion euros, marking a 10.5% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
According to the monthly survey by the Hellenic Association of Insurance Companies (EAEE), total premium income amounted to 2.101 billion euros, compared to 1.902 billion euros a year earlier, with the life insurance sector serving as the main driver of growth.
Life insurance premiums totaled 1.016 billion euros, marking a 16.1% increase, while property and casualty insurance premiums rose by 5.7% to 1.085 billion euros. In the motor liability sector, premiums amounted to 284.9 million euros, up 4.9%.
A key contributor was unit-linked life insurance products, which now account for 47.3% of total life insurance premiums. This category recorded a 28.7% increase, with premiums reaching 481 million euros. Similarly, traditional life insurance premiums rose by 3.8%, to 425.5 million euros.
In property and casualty insurance, the largest segment remained motor vehicle liability insurance, with a 26.2% market share and premiums of nearly 285 million euros. Fire and natural disaster insurance (+9.1%), credit insurance (+15.3%), and the assistance sector (+7.6%) also recorded significant increases. In contrast, other property damage insurance declined by 1.8%.
However, the picture in April was more subdued. Total premium income stood at 508.3 million euros, marking a 4% year-over-year decline. The decline stemmed mainly from the life insurance sector, where premiums fell by 9.2%, affected by a significant drop in investment-linked products (-22.8%). In contrast, property and casualty insurance continued to trend upward, recording a 1.1% increase.
On a 12-month basis, however, the market maintains strong growth momentum. Premium income for the rolling 12-month period from May 2025 to April 2026 increased by 8.7% compared to the previous 12-month period, with life insurance rising by 9.7% and property and casualty insurance by 7.9%.
