“This isn’t a government; it’s a waiting room on Evelpidon Street,” emphasizes the Greek Left Coalition (ELAS), essentially calling on the prime minister to expel Dimitris Avramopoulos “just as Mr. Androulakis did when he expelled Ms. Kaïli for her involvement in the same case.”
As Alexis Tsipras’s party emphasizes in a statement, “Mr. Mitsotakis’s New Democracy ultimately generates more scandals than Greek public opinion can handle,” referring to yesterday’s developments:
“Yesterday morning, former New Democracy MEP Anna Michelle Asimakopoulou was convicted—not for ‘an email,’ as the government spokesperson misleadingly claimed, but for leaking the personal data of 25,500 expatriates.
And this afternoon, a European arrest warrant was issued against the member of parliament, former European Commissioner, and New Democracy minister, Dimitris Avramopoulos, for accepting tens of thousands of euros from an NGO that was attempting to “cover up” Qatar’s human rights violations.”
Consequently, he concludes: “The total number of government officials involved in scandals or facing trial over the past seven years has well surpassed the magic number of 44.
This is not a government; it is a waiting room on Evelpidon Street.
We look forward with interest to seeing whether Mr. Mitsotakis will follow Mr. Androulakis, who expelled Ms. Kaïli for her involvement in the same case, or whether he will continue to turn a blind eye to the fugitive Mr. Avramopoulos.”
