The Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Stavros Papastavrou, will participate today in the European Union Council of Environment Ministers, which is taking place in Luxembourg.
According to the main items on the agenda, the Council will review the progress of discussions regarding the amendment to the regulation on CO2 emission standards for cars and light-duty trucks. The amendment was proposed by the Commission on December 16, 2025, as part of the automotive package aimed at supporting the sector’s transition to clean mobility.
Ministers will exchange views on the implementation of the Water Resilience Strategy, one year after its adoption, and will discuss the next steps regarding the regulation on the registration, evaluation, authorization, and restriction of chemical products (REACH).
At the same time, the Cypriot Presidency will brief ministers on actions to strengthen the EU’s negotiating position at international climate conferences, in the run-up to the 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31), which will take place in November 2026. Finally, during lunch, the ministers will hold an informal discussion on climate resilience in Europe.
On Friday, June 26, Mr. Papastavrou will participate in the EU Energy Council, accompanied by Deputy Minister Nikos Tsafos.
