By decision of the Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance, Mr. Nikos Papathanasis, the project “Flood Protection Works, Stormwater Management Projects in the Nea Makri Area of Attica” was included in the NSRF sectoral program “Environment and Climate Change 2021–2027,” with the Directorate of Flood Protection and Land Improvement Works of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport as the beneficiary, and a total public expenditure of €62,711,124.28 from Cohesion Fund resources.
Upon completion, the project will resolve the chronic flooding problem in the Municipality of Marathon, N. Makris, in the area between the settlement of Agios Andreas and the former U.S. military base.
The construction of the catchment basins will help protect both the streams themselves and the areas on either side of their channels from changes in land use. In this way, the projects will help prevent the loss of human life and property due to flooding and reduce the need for civil protection mobilizations. Furthermore, they will boost economic activity and improve residents’ quality of life.
