“Respect collective decisions,” Socrates Famellos urged all SYRIZA officials, brushing aside the main objection raised by a powerful faction within the party that these decisions are not “clear-cut” regarding the party’s existence.
During his remarks at today’s meeting of the Political Secretariat, Mr. Famellos emphasized, on the one hand, that SYRIZA “has the political and programmatic capital to play a leading role in the progressive camp” and that “the coming months will be critical for the party and for Greek society.” On the other hand, however, he reiterated his position (which was approved by a majority at the recent Central Committee meeting) that SYRIZA supports Alexis Tsipras’s ELAS, once again characterizing opposition to it as a “strategic mistake.” And, therefore, the opposing slates (i.e., those of SYRIZA and ELAS) in the national elections.
Polakis: We Have the Signatures
Arriving at today’s meeting, Pavlos Polakis (who, along with Nikos Pappas, Rena Dourou, Panos Rigas, and others represent the “militant minority”) stated that signatures have been collected to convene a new meeting of the Central Committee in order to clarify the situation.
If true, this means that 70 members of the Central Committee have signed, compared to approximately 40 who sided with the aforementioned group at the previous meeting.
