On Thursday, June 25, Minister of Labor and Social Security Niki Kerameos inaugurated the workers’ housing complex in Kyrakali, Grevena, completing a social housing project, the completion of which had been stalled for more than 20 years.
The Minister of Labor and Social Security, Niki Kerameos, stated:
“Today is a day of joy and optimism, as we see a truly inspiring project being completed and handed over to its beneficiaries. Eighty new, exceptional homes that will benefit more than 300 of our fellow citizens. A project that began 23 years ago but got caught up in the gears of Greek bureaucracy.
The political will, however, was there. In recent years, we took some decisive steps to unblock the project very quickly; thanks to the excellent cooperation of the contractor and the exceptional diligence of the Regional Development Agency (DYPA) and the Ministry of Labor, we managed to unblock it, complete it, and today we have already handed over the first 40 concessions to the beneficiaries.”
DYPA Director Yianna Chormova stated:
“Today is a particularly significant day for DYPA, because a project that had remained unfinished for years is finally fulfilling its true purpose: the people for whom it was designed. Behind each of these homes is a family that has been waiting to have a home of their own, to feel safer, and to make a fresh start.
The completion of the Kyrakali housing development reaffirms our commitment to transforming unresolved issues from the past into meaningful solutions for citizens, by implementing initiatives that address real social needs and improve the daily lives of beneficiaries.
DYPA continues to consistently utilize its housing portfolio and complete housing projects that had been pending for years, enhancing access to decent housing and supporting workers, families, and local communities throughout the country.”
The arrival of the first beneficiaries in the housing development marks the completion of a project designed to meet the housing needs of approximately 300 residents of the area.
At this stage, the first 40 homes are being allocated to beneficiaries who have completed the relevant verification process, while the process continues for the remaining beneficiaries and alternates in the housing development.
The project was put out to bid in 2003 by the former Workers’ Housing Organization (OEK) and completed by DYPA, which, as the universal successor to the organization, methodically proceeded with its completion and handover to the beneficiaries.
The Kyrakali housing development comprises a total of 80 residences, organized into complexes of two-story buildings, as well as shared facilities designed to serve the residents. It also features a multipurpose hall and supporting facilities that contribute to the creation of a modern and functional residential community.
Beneficiaries include large families, families with children, and individuals belonging to vulnerable social groups, a fact that highlights the social nature of the worker housing program and its importance to the local community.
