The Minister of Environment and Energy, Stavros Papastavrou, accompanied by Deputy Minister Nikos Tsafos, is participating today in the European Union Energy Ministers’ Council meeting taking place in Luxembourg.
Upon arriving at the meeting, Papastavrou stated: “Today we have an important meeting of the European Union’s energy ministers. The focus is on networks and interconnections. The time for decisions has finally come. In fact, Europe must move quickly toward a centralized plan.
A plan that will enable the creation of a truly single electricity market—not 27 fragmented markets. Grids and interconnections are not merely a technical issue. They concern us all. It is an issue that affects Europe’s energy security, competitiveness, and cohesion, as it will help limit price disparities among member states.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s government has been consistently investing in networks and interconnections since 2019. Just a few days ago, the share capital increase for ADMIE was successfully completed, which will enable it to carry out its ambitious investment program. Once the power interconnections with Crete, the Northern Aegean, the Dodecanese, and the Cyclades are completed, this will yield a benefit of one billion euros for Greek consumers.
Strong national and European networks ensure energy security and affordable energy prices for citizens and businesses. And on this point, our Europe cannot and must not make any concessions.”
