The ongoing internal party conflict, centered on Alexis Tsipras’s Greek Left Alliance and the possibility of SYRIZA running independently in the elections, is being brought before a new meeting of the Central Committee. Adding to the tense atmosphere is the departure of Mariliza Xenogiannakopoulou, while reports of further departures by party officials and lawmakers breaking ranks have intensified.
Ms. Xenogiannakopoulou stated: “I cannot conceive of a SYRIZA ticket running against Alexis Tsipras and ELAS.
Political and social necessity demands a rallying around a strong progressive left-wing bloc that will once again represent a majority movement for political and social change.”
The party continues with initiatives and interventions; it has no intention of disbanding—that is the message from Koumoundourou.
SYRIZA spokesperson Christos Giannoulis, speaking on Real FM, stated: “Alexis Tsipras’s party’s intolerance or refusal to engage in any form of cooperation is a bit excessive.
Whether or not we will run in the elections is not, in my view, a question that can be answered with the phrase ‘ex officio.’”
ELAS spokesperson Theoni Koufonikolakou stated on Parapolitika 90.1 FM: “We are not telling other political parties what to do. We are following our own path and remain focused on our goals.”
At the same time, the internal party opposition is openly questioning the decisions made by Socrates Famellos.
SYRIZA MP Nikos Pappas, speaking to OREN, emphasized that: “Given the current balance of power, it is clear that a realignment cannot take place.”
“Obviously, if no other agreement is reached, we will be there—men and women alike—to fight the election battle,” said Anastasia Sapouna, deputy secretary of the Central Committee of SYRIZA-PS.
“I will repeat once again that I am not here as an independent member of Parliament; I am a member of Parliament for SYRIZA,” Pavlos Polakis emphasized while speaking in Parliament.
The Central Committee meeting is expected to take place on July 4 or July 11.
