Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, to visit victims of the arson attacks that took place overnight at the homes of three New Democracy officials.
Accompanied by the Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, and the Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, the prime minister visited hospital wards and was briefed on the condition of the injured. One of them, the 70-year-old mother of New Democracy politician Aphrodite Nestora, is on a ventilator in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit, with burns all over her body.
After thanking the hospital staff for the treatment and care they provided to the injured, she expressed hope that everything will turn out well for the woman who is fighting for her life in the ICU, while sending a message to the perpetrators of the attacks that they will be arrested and brought to justice.
“I would like to reiterate once again that violence has no place in an organized society. And those who cloak themselves in the guise of social struggles to carry out these acts are nothing more than criminals,” he said, adding: “They will be treated as such; I have absolute confidence in the Greek Police and the law enforcement authorities. We will find those who committed this despicable act and bring them to justice so they can be tried and held fully accountable, as is proper in a well-governed state.”
The Barrage of Attacks
The arson attacks took place in quick succession, just minutes apart, in the early morning hours at the homes of the chairman of the New Democracy (ND) Executive Committee in Thessaloniki, Zisis Ioakeimovich, the former member of parliament for Thessaloniki B, Savvas Anastasiadis, and politician Afroditi Nestora.
Apart from Nestora’s mother, who suffered severe burns, Nestora herself is being treated for minor burns to her hands, while her father and two other people living in the same building are being treated for respiratory problems.
