As part of the modernization of Athens International Airport’s (AIA) FBCC operational network—which supports the airport’s core operations as well as critical Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) systems, ensuring the continuous and seamless operation of a complex and demanding environment.
As part of the strategy to modernize AIA’s digital infrastructure, the existing network was upgraded through replacement, with the aim of enhancing scalability, availability, and operational efficiency, in line with growing operational requirements, without any disruption to airport operations.
Performance Technologies implemented a modern architecture based on HPE Networking and Software-Defined Networking (SDN) technologies, tailored to the requirements of a mission-critical environment.
The approach included the modernization of the campus network and the data center. On campus, all equipment (access, aggregation, and core) was replaced, a high-capacity backbone was deployed, and a transition to a VXLAN/EVPN architecture was completed, while simultaneously enhancing security in accordance with international standards.
In the data center, a Spine-Leaf architecture was implemented, featuring two Active/Active infrastructures interconnected via redundant 100G links, ensuring high availability and resilience. The use of SDN enabled automation and simplified management through a central orchestrator, while 24/7 monitoring and support from Performance Technologies’ NOC ensures a high level of service with SLA-based response and recovery.
The result is a modern, secure, and fully scalable network that reliably supports the airport’s mission-critical operations, significantly reduces operational complexity, and lays a strong foundation for the digital transformation and future development of AIA, the company reports.
