Kostas Zachariadis, until recently the party’s press secretary, announced his departure from SYRIZA Kostas Zachariadis, in a written statement in which he criticizes the party’s course and expresses his support for Alexis Tsipras’s new political venture.
In his statement, Mr. Zachariadis notes that “at critical moments in politics and public life, we must speak openly and clearly,” noting that the founding of the new party by Alexis Tsipras creates a new political reality that, as he points out, “no one can ignore.”
As he argues, the new venture “is reshaping the political landscape of the Left and the Center-Left” and “appears poised to play a decisive role in shifting the political balance in the country.”
Criticism of SYRIZA’s Course
The former SYRIZA press secretary argues that the party is once again in a period of intense introspection, particularly in light of the Central Committee meeting on July 11.
“Under these circumstances, SYRIZA finds itself once again in a new vortex of introspection, and in the run-up to the Central Committee meeting, questions of political direction and leadership are being raised, while room for maneuver has long since been exhausted,” he notes.
This Can’t Be My SYRIZA
Mr. Zachariadis makes it clear that he cannot remain in a SYRIZA that would follow a different electoral course from that of Alexis Tsipras. “In my opinion, a SYRIZA that runs on a different ticket than Tsipras in the elections cannot be my SYRIZA, my party,” he emphasizes.
He adds that this shift “has already taken place” in the party’s public discourse, stressing that he cannot participate “in a SYRIZA as it is taking shape from here on out, much less if hostility and confrontation develop on non-political grounds.”
Concluding his statement, Kostas Zachariadis notes that “we are at the very beginning of a new cycle in the country’s political system, as well as in the broader progressive movement, which will last a long time,” thereby formalizing his departure from SYRIZA.
