The project contract for the bioclimatic redevelopment of the service road of Mesogeion Ave., in the section that falls within the administrative boundaries of the Municipality of Papagou – Cholargos, was signed by the Governor of Attica Nikos Hardalias, together with the Mayor Ilias Apostolopoulos, the CEO of the Region’s development organization “New Metropolitan Attica S.A.” Giorgos Kormas and a representative of the contractor.
The project is financed with 4 million euros plus VAT from the Attica Region’s own resources and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027, improving accessibility and the operation of the Municipality’s main commercial zone, as well as the daily life of the area’s residents.
As part of the works, a section of the service road approximately 1.8 km long will be configured as a low-traffic road with a width of three and a half meters, on which vehicles and bicycles will move at low speed, not exceeding 20 km per hour.
Additionally, the existing roadway will be reconstructed, as well as a separating island from the sidewalk, which will be widened in a way that will ensure its comfortable use by pedestrians and full accessibility for people with disabilities and people with mobility problems. At the same time, more than 150 new controlled parking spaces will be demarcated, while new street lighting, urban equipment and green plantings will be installed.
“About a year ago, we had signed at the Region’s Administrative Headquarters, together with my good friend and active local government official Ilias Apostolopoulos, the programmatic contract for the redevelopment of one of the most pivotal road arteries in the Northern Sector.
Today, we are in a position to put this project as well on the path to implementation, keeping yet another of our commitments to the citizens” Mr. Hardalias stated and added: “This specific intervention is not limited to an aesthetic upgrade. It substantially changes the way residents, professionals and visitors move and use public space.
With funding of 4 million euros from the Region’s own resources, we are shaping a safer, greener and more functional service road, with modern infrastructure, better accessibility and real care for pedestrians, cyclists and people with disabilities. This is our perception of urban redevelopments: projects with a clear environmental footprint, which strengthen sustainable mobility and improve quality of life in practice.
We continue with planning, consistency and specific timetables, so that every available resource returns to citizens in the form of useful and modern infrastructure. Our goal is for these interventions to leave a permanent and measurable imprint on everyday life, substantially upgrading every neighborhood of Attica”.
For his part, the Mayor of Papagou – Cholargos Ilias Apostolopoulos stated: “I want to personally thank the Governor of Attica, Nikos Hardalias, because on his own initiative, all actions by the Attica Region for the bioclimatic redevelopment of the service road of Mesogeion Ave. moved forward very quickly.
This is a very important project for our Municipality, concerning the redevelopment of the sidewalks along the entire service road of Mesogeion, which will now have a uniform appearance and the characteristics of a European city, with modern urban equipment, modern lighting and – of course – with a speed limit of 20 km, with a coexistence of bicycle and car on the modern pavement that will be constructed.
I am sure that despite the temporary inconvenience that residents, visitors and shop owners will undergo, after a short time we will all be enjoying a very useful and very critical project that is being carried out in our area”.
Present at the signing of the contract were the Deputy Regional Governor of the Northern Sector Margarita Varsou, the General Director of “New Metropolitan Attica S.A.” Efi Filiopoulou and the Director of Technical Services of the Municipality of Papagou - Cholargos Christina Anagnostopoulou.
