The Greek organized retail market recorded a positive performance during the June - August 2026 quarter, with total sales increasing by 5.2% in value compared to the corresponding period of 2025.
The FMCG categories increased by 5%, while the bazaar categories continued to grow at a significantly faster pace, recording an increase of 10.6%.
The market's growth came mainly from the strengthening of consumer demand, as sales volumes increased by 4.6%, while inflation stood at 0.4%, confirming that the market's positive course was supported primarily by the increase in consumption.
Tourist areas continued to be a key growth driver, with the islands recording the highest performance in the overall market (+9.2%), followed by Thessaloniki (+6.3%) and Crete (+5.8%).
At the same time, the performance of categories linked to seasonal consumption, convenience and the modern lifestyle was particularly dynamic, such as Ready-to-Eat products, nuts, dried fruits and eggs.
Growth was also significant in the categories of personal care, household products and Bazaar, which continued to strengthen throughout the summer period.
Specifically, Bazaar categories were one of the main pillars of growth in the summer, with a double-digit growth rate and strong performances in sectors such as home equipment, electronics, toys and school supplies.
As stated by NIQ's Retail Vertical Leader for the markets of Greece and Bulgaria, Alexandros Floros:
“Behind the positive indicators of the summer, we discern a consumer who remains cautious but does not stop consuming. The strengthening of sales volumes, the momentum of tourist areas and the growth of categories linked to convenience and the modern lifestyle show that the Greek market continues to evolve.
For retailers and suppliers, the challenge remains the same: to offer meaningful value, while at the same time maintaining innovation and differentiation on the shelf. This summer's findings confirm that the businesses that understand consumers' changing needs in a timely manner are the ones that will continue to stand out in the market”.
