The tender for the new Thessaloniki Anticancer Hospital “Theagenio” is moving to the next phase, a project with an estimated value of 350.5 million euros, a project for which there is strong interest from constructors.
In the critical health sector, work is also progressing on three more hospitals - in Komotini, Thessaloniki and Sparta - with a donation from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, with progress on all three having reached approximately 35%.
The competitive dialogue begins
At Theagenio Anticancer Hospital, the Board of Directors approved the minutes of the tender Committee, paving the way for the start of Phase B of the process and specifically the stage of the competitive dialogue.
This is the first project in the health sector in Greece to be implemented through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), a fact that makes the development of the tender process particularly important. Continuing to the next phase are Avax, the Aktor - Metlen consortium and GEK Terna.
The project provides for the construction of a new hospital with a capacity of 425 beds, in single and double rooms. The aim is to cover the needs of prevention, diagnosis, hospitalization and treatment of oncology patients and to upgrade the related services in Northern Greece.
The contractor to be selected will undertake the construction and equipment of the hospital, over a five-year horizon, and then the management of its operation for 25 years.
This is a project that fits the strategy of many construction groups, which are seeking projects with a long-term horizon and not only the construction object. The building facilities will cover a total of 55,000 sq.m.
Works on the three hospitals at 35%
Meanwhile, construction works are progressing for the three hospitals with AVAX as contractor, with a total value of 443 million euros.
The three hospitals are: the SNF University Pediatric Hospital of Thessaloniki, the SNF General Hospital of Komotini, and the SNF General Hospital of Sparta, among the most pioneering projects worldwide.
The three new hospitals were designed with the aim of providing a high level of healthcare, but also with an emphasis on sustainability, in line with international best practices. At the same time, their certification under LEED at the highest level is envisaged.
All three hospitals have been designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW), with design support from Betaplan.
Ready in early 2028
According to the latest estimates, the progress of works on the three projects amounts to approximately 35%, while their delivery is expected in early 2028. It is noted that the completion of the hospitals may take place earlier; however, the contractor’s contract provides for the delivery of the three projects with the equipment.
