A Written Question to the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas, was submitted today in Brussels by PASOK MEP Nikolas Farantouris.
The intervention of the Greek MEP comes one week after his statement in the Plenary of the European Parliament, at the special session on the Middle East, where he requested a clear position from the EU External Action Service “on the serious geopolitical development that potentially affects the security and defense of Europe”.
As the PASOK MEP emphasizes, the Mecca Agreement, which was signed on 7 August 2026, constitutes the most significant diplomatic development in the Middle East, as it “unites” militarily Turkey, which participates in the Euro-Atlantic institutions, with Pakistan, the only Muslim state that possesses nuclear weapons, and Saudi Arabia, the most powerful force in the Gulf.
“This is an agreement that requires particular attention, as it marks an attempt to exercise a new and independent diplomatic action in the region”, Nikolas Farantouris points out.
The trilateral agreement includes clauses of mutual military assistance and the promotion of joint military and industrial projects, without, however, there being detailed information about their exact content.
In view of the above, the Greek MEP requests a written response from the High Representative:
a) What is the official position of the European Commission on the Mecca Agreement?
b) What is the exact content and what are the expected consequences of the Agreement, given the concerns it raises about its effects on the balance in the Eastern Mediterranean?
c) Whether the clauses of the Agreement are compatible with the EU’s new security and defense architecture?
In statements today from Brussels, Nikolas Farantouris stressed:
“It is not possible, with these shocking geopolitical developments in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean region, for the European Union not to have full knowledge of the agreements and military alliances, especially between countries that seek cooperation with the EU. We demand immediate information and clear answers”.
