Seasonally adjusted unemployment in Greece fell to 7.4% in August, from 7.9% in July and 8.8% in August 2025, according to the Labour Force Survey of ELSTAT. It is the lowest August rate in the entire time series published by the Authority since 2012, when unemployment stood at 25.9%.
85,000 more employed in one year
The reduction in unemployment is accompanied by an increase in employment. The employed reached 4,410,105 people in August, 85,042 more (+2.0%) compared with a year earlier and 17,322 more (+0.4%) compared with July.
The unemployed fell to 350,800 people. This means 67,181 fewer (−16.1%) on an annual basis and 25,656 fewer (−6.8%) compared with the previous month.
The number of those outside the labour force is also decreasing, that is, those who neither work nor seek work. They numbered 2,943,171 in August, 60,682 fewer (−2.0%) than last year, with a marginal monthly increase of 4,130 people. Their number has been declining every year since 2021.
Women's unemployment more than double
The improvement is not the same for everyone. In August, men's unemployment fell to 4.9%, while women's fell to 10.3%, a rate more than double.
