On this day and 150 years ago, and more specifically on 30/9/1876, the official history of the ASE begins, when under the Government of Alexandros Koumoundouros, government approval was given for the establishment of the Greek Stock Exchange.
Its first home was located in the premises of the Central Post Office. It was then moved to the Argyropoulos House, at the northwestern corner of Aiolou and Sofokleous streets. However, it did not manage to remain there for long. Because in 1885 it was installed in a Building at 11 Sofokleous Street, which had been erected by the Anonymous Stock Exchange Company "Hermes". However, the Stock Exchange Company was dissolved and thus the later Commercial Bank forced the Stock Exchange to seek a new home.
Finally, in 1891 the Stock Exchange was housed in a Building at 1 Pesmazoglou Street.
The unique, artistically, hall of the so-called today "old Stock Exchange", began to become non-functional. Especially after 1923, the need to find a suitable Building became imperative, due to the many appointments and the increase in Members crowding into the small trading hall.
In November 1934, the National Bank offered the Stock Exchange Committee a new Building, adjacent to the old one, at 10 Sofokleous Street.
In April 2001, the trading floor of the ASE, at 10 Sofokleous Street, was abolished.
In July 2007, the transfer of all the Group's Services to the new privately owned Building at 110 Athinon Avenue began.
In December 2007, the historic Building at 10 Sofokleous Street closed its doors for the last time as a Stock Exchange and returned to the National Bank, with the central hall hosting events.
Coming to today, clearly upward was the last session of the month and of the stock market nine-month period, with the main ASE indices (GI, FTSE25) moving permanently in positive territory.
For those who insist on dealing with statistics, the close of trading found the General Index at new 17-year highs, with the immediately higher close having been recorded on 26/10/2009 (2781.13 points) and the banking sector index at new 130-month highs, with the immediately higher close having been recorded on 11/11/2015 (3396.6 points).
After today's technical developments and according to the optimistic scenario, “with the breakout and holding above the recent highs of 2726 points, the recent bearish formation is immediately invalidated and the conditions are created for a continuation of the upward movement. The ‘shorts’ are beginning to ‘sweat’ and logically may help in fueling the rise. Strange as it may seem, 2790 is not far away, the way things are developing. Otherwise, 2714 maintains the very short-term picture of the situation, while a break may put the 2697 level to the test”.
On the other hand, perhaps worth noting is the relative retreat of indices and individual stocks from the intraday highs.
The “rotation” on the board of large capitalization continued, also due to the end of the stock market nine-month period, while the moves of buyers in mid- and smaller-cap titles were clearly more selective, depending on the results that listed companies continued to announce.
It is recalled that today marks the completion of the publication period for first-half corporate results.
“Attention should be focused on balance sheet changes, on working capital, on non-recurring profits and on provisions, and not only on the increase in EBITDA. Portfolio rebalancing, ahead of the end of the third quarter, may keep turnover at above-average levels, especially in Banks and in Companies that were recently added to indices,” as noted by the master of the genre, Manos Hatzidakis (Beta Sec.).
On the other hand, Capital Maritime Finance Corp. is launching the first shipping IPO in Greece with the exclusive listing of all its shares on the ASE.
“At the same time, it constitutes the first substantial move toward establishing Athens as a strong hub of Global Shipping,” sources point out.
According to information, “the Company of Vangelis Marinakis aims through the IPO to raise up to €200 million, with the funds raised intended to finance its shipbuilding program and cover working capital needs”. The Company has a fleet of 36 vessels and contracted revenues of $3.9 billion, with the average remaining charter duration reaching 9.5 years (data as of 30/6/2026).
Next comes METKA.
From there on, despite the rise that has preceded it, Alpha Bank estimates that “Greek stocks are not expensive. Their valuations are more attractive than the Eurozone average. Thus, if corporate profitability continues to increase, there is room for further upside”.
Meanwhile, according to the statement of the Hellenic Capital Market Commission and regarding net short positions exceeding 0.5%:
AKO Capital LLP remains with a net short position of 1.31857% in the MTLN share, Qube Research & Technologies Limited with a net short position of 0.89324% in the ADMIE stock and a net short position of 0.50267% in the AKTR share.

With declining tendencies the major European markets, with active investors focusing their attention on oil, on the macro data being announced, and on the Government bond market.
More specifically, the yield on the US 2-year note falls to 4.83%, on the 10-year to 5.23%. The yield on the 30-year is at 5.59%. The yield on the Greek 10-year note is at 4.436%.
“The yield on the 30-year US Government bond has room to reach 6%, as the current ‘sell-off’ in the Government bond Market has not yet priced in the risk of a prolonged increase in productivity,” according to a report by Barclays Capital.
Higher than the previous two readings had shown was the growth rate of the US Economy in the second quarter. Specifically, US GDP increased by 2.2% on an annual basis in the second quarter, according to the latest revision. Analysts had forecast that the growth reading would remain unchanged at 1.5%. Meanwhile, the 2025 growth reading was also revised marginally higher to 2.3%, from 2.1% previously.
The personal consumption expenditures price index (PCE) in the US rose by 3.4% on an annual basis in August, significantly below analysts' forecast for an increase of 3.7%. On a monthly basis it rose by 0.3%, as analysts had also forecast.
Given the above data, it follows that all market eyes are turned to the next announcements by the Central Banks.
It is recalled that according to the economic calendar, the next meetings - announcements of the ECB are scheduled for 29/10 and 17/12/2026.
The corresponding ones of the Fed are scheduled for 28/10 and 9/12/2026.

From there on and as previously mentioned, today's was the last session of the month and of the stock market nine-month period.
September was the sixth consecutive rising month, with monthly gains of 2.28% for the GI and gains of 6.8% for the Banking Index.
The six consecutive rising months are a yearly record, with the immediately larger record having been recorded in the period November 2024 – September 2025, when the GI had completed eleven consecutive rising months, referring back to the two-year period 1986 - 1987, where an equal number of consecutive months of gains had been recorded (the streak started from 61.09 points on 30 April 1986 and was completed at 157.85 points on 31 March 1987).
