A bilateral meeting with the Energy Minister of Azerbaijan, Mr. Parviz Shahbazov, was held today, Wednesday, September 30, by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Stavros Papastavrou, at the Ministry of Environment and Energy.
The meeting focused on strengthening energy cooperation between Greece and Azerbaijan, with particular emphasis on energy security, the diversification of natural gas supply sources and routes, and the development of the Southern Gas Corridor.
In this context, the Minister highlighted Greece’s important role as a regional energy hub, through the promotion and development of electrical interconnections such as the GSI with Cyprus and Israel and GREGY with Egypt, with Mr. Papastavrou also emphasizing the strategic importance of the Vertical Corridor and the prospects it creates, with the aim of strengthening energy security and the diversification of supply sources.
Particular reference was also made to the prospects for cooperation in the field of Renewable Energy Sources and the energy transition, with emphasis on the exchange of know-how and the development of new areas of cooperation in the field of clean energy.
During the meeting, the common will for the further strengthening of bilateral economic and trade relations between the Hellenic Republic and the Republic of Azerbaijan was also confirmed, on the basis of mutual trust, respect, and common interests.
The two sides recognized the positive course of bilateral cooperation and underlined the significant possibilities for increasing bilateral trade and further diversifying its composition.
Those participating in the meeting included, among others, from the Azerbaijani side, the Ambassador of Azerbaijan, Mr. Arif Mammadov, the Deputy Minister of Economy, Mr. Anar Akhundov and the Director of the Renewable Energy Agency of Azerbaijan, Mr. Javid Abdullayev. From the Greek side, those participating were the Secretary General for Energy and Mineral Raw Materials, Ms. Despoina Paliarouta, the Ambassador of Greece to Azerbaijan, Ms. Maria Papakonstantinou, and the TAP Representative in Greece (Country Representative Greece), Mr. Ioannis Maris.
