In August 2026, the weighted average interest rate on total new deposits remained almost unchanged at 0.37% compared with the previous month.
More specifically, according to the data of the Bank of Greece, the average interest rate on overnight deposits from households remained unchanged at 0.03%, while the corresponding interest rate on deposits from businesses increased by 8 basis points and stood at 0.21%.
As the BoG points out, the interest rate margin between new deposits and loans increased to 4.42 percentage points.
The average interest rate on deposits with an agreed maturity of up to 1 year from households decreased by 7 basis points and stood at 1.17%, while the corresponding interest rate on deposits from businesses decreased by 5 basis points and stood at 1.97%.
New Loans
The weighted average interest rate on total new loans to households and businesses increased by 11 basis points and stood at 4.79%.
More specifically, the average interest rate on consumer loans without a defined maturity (a category that includes loans through credit cards, open loans and overdrafts from current accounts) increased by 4 basis points to 14.59%.
The average interest rate on consumer loans with a specific duration and floating interest rate decreased by 56 basis points to 9.89%, while the average interest rate on housing loans with a floating interest rate decreased by 14 basis points to 3.39%.
The average interest rate on business loans without a defined maturity remained unchanged at 4.75%, while the corresponding interest rate on professional loans remained almost unchanged at 6.90%.
The average interest rate on new business loans with a specific duration and floating interest rate increased by 12 basis points to 4.35%. The average interest rate on fixed-maturity loans with a floating interest rate to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) increased by 10 basis points and stood at 4.58%.
As regards the structure of interest rates by loan amount, it is noted that the average interest rate for loans up to and including 250,000 euros decreased by 17 basis points and stood at 4.94%, for loans from 250,001 up to 1 million euros it increased by 13 basis points to 4.69%, while for loans above 1 million euros it increased by 8 basis points to 4.24%.
2. Interest rates on outstanding balances of deposits and loans in euro
Outstanding Deposits
The weighted average interest rate on total outstanding deposits (including overnight deposits) remained unchanged at 0.37% in August 2026.
More specifically, the average interest rates on the outstanding balances of deposits with an agreed maturity of up to 2 years from households and from businesses remained almost unchanged at 1.21% and 2.09% respectively.
Outstanding Loans
The weighted average interest rate on outstanding loans remained almost unchanged and stood at 4.84%.
More specifically, the average interest rate on the outstanding balances of housing loans with a duration of more than 5 years remained almost unchanged at 3.74%. The corresponding interest rate on consumer and other loans to individuals and private non-profit institutions also remained almost unchanged at 8.51%.
The average interest rate on the outstanding balances of business loans with a duration of more than 5 years remained almost unchanged at 4.41%. The corresponding interest rate on professional loans increased by 4 basis points to 5.60%.
