After yesterday’s “mini sell off”, where the main indices of the ATHEX completed trading at the low of the day, along with eight large-cap stocks, while the GD and DTR recorded the biggest decline of the last six months, there were quite a few market professionals who expected a reaction today, even of a technical nature, using as a springboard the positive picture of the major European markets.
Instead, those who follow developments on the domestic stock market board “day by day”, saw the General Index start today’s trading with evident nervousness and continuous sign changes, but shortly after 12.00 it “put on red”, which it maintained until the end.
Among the positives of today’s session, the reaction from the intraday lows of 2620 points, among the negatives the very poor ratio of advancing to declining stocks, even if this improved somewhat compared to the day’s lows.
According to analysts, “abroad, oil prices and the course of government bond yields, continue to be a source of concern. To the above and until the end of the two-month period that has begun, the U.S. midterm elections, the closing of the books of foreign institutional investors, as well as the negative tradition of October, should be added.
Domestically, the second reading of first-half financial results may create room for selective placements and position reshuffling, but it is by no means certain that this will happen if the broader climate remains cautious.
Besides, there were quite a few stocks that yesterday gave some kind of reaction, in the wake of the positive results that were announced, but today and a little higher, in most cases, buyers “faced” unexpectedly high supply (!)
The picture is also cautious on the large-cap board and it remains to be seen whether the rising sessions that preceded completed the mandatory placements of foreign Funds and with the end of the stock market quarter and whatever “window dressing”, with the start of the new month, the domestic stock market has entered a “buying vacuum”. The positive scenario appears to be the one that calls for selective placements and the negative one, sales by foreigners in stocks that outperformed in the previous period”.
On the same wavelength is also Ilias Zacharakis (Fast Finance SA, who notes “on the one hand it seems that the ‘tail’ from the rebalancing was completed at the end of the month and on the other we have some stocks, mainly small and mid-cap, that are giving buy signals. The daily ‘longs’ on the indices are being maintained. The oscillator on the weekly is looking to correct, without this meaning that we cannot have divergences. The 2737 GDXA level, we remind, is a long-term monthly resistance and the zone at the upper part of the upward channel. A correction with a good time scenario and not so much prices would be ideal. The issue is that 2670 - 2680 has become resistance”.
It should be noted that at the day’s lows and from the large-cap board, only the MTLN stock (+1.32%) was being saved with a positive sign, while declining stocks were four times the advancing ones, a ratio that improved only slightly toward the end.
With a disposition to react the major European markets, with active investors drawing psychology from the partial de-escalation of oil prices, but also of yields in the bond market, except France, after the data from the U.S. labor market.
More specifically, the yield on the U.S. 2-year note falls to 4.72%, on the 10-year to 5.19%. The yield on the 30-year at 5.58%. The yield on the Greek 10-year note at 4.548%, the yield on the corresponding French one at 4.92%.

On the other hand, the U.S. economy added in September just 29,000 new payrolls, versus 133,000 in August and the average estimate of analysts at Dow Jones for 84,000. It is also noted that August’s 133,000 payrolls resulted after a downward revision from the 162,000 initially estimated. The U.S. unemployment rate posted a marginal increase in September to 4.2%, from 4.1%, while the average forecast of analysts expected it to remain at 4.1%.
