The German financial newspaper Handelsblatt deals with Greece’s armament plans and Turkey’s reactions, describing the developments in the Aegean as a “dangerous geopolitical puzzle,” while noting that “the risk of escalation is increasing.”
As the report characteristically states, “Greece and Turkey, both NATO member countries, are once again exchanging mutual accusations,” while it underlines that “the period of détente that followed the visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to Athens at the end of 2023 has now come to an end.”
According to Handelsblatt, Turkey “considers it a threat to its security that “the Greek government is strengthening its military presence on the Aegean islands with Israeli weapons systems”,” while “additional tensions are being caused by the planned undersea electric cable in the Eastern Mediterranean.”
The report also refers to Turkey’s plans for the “Blue Homeland,” while noting that “the relevant bill may be submitted to Ankara’s parliament within the month.”
Finally, the newspaper stresses that “neither of the two governments is willing to risk an open war.” As it concludes, “the greatest danger is an acute crisis that will spiral out of control.”
