The need for the reunification of the Parthenon Marbles was reiterated by Kyriakos Mitsotakis speaking at To Vima’s conference, “Dialogues for Athens.”
“At a time when democracy is being challenged from the right and from the left, this story has a particular global political resonance. And that is why I believe that the unification of the Parthenon sculptures at the Acropolis Museum is such a timely issue and must be treated as a unique case,” the Prime Minister said characteristically.
“I prefer the term unification instead of return”
He also explained that he prefers to use the term “unification” instead of the term “return,” because he would like to see the Parthenon sculptures “as a very unique case, essentially they are part of a monument that was dismembered.”
“I would like to present this as a win-win proposal. We could offer the British Museum a unique cultural partnership. We could offer it access to temporary exhibitions of Greek treasures that have never left the country,” he added.
Mr. Mitsotakis commented that “for those of us who were saddened when the United Kingdom left the European family, we were particularly interested in the comments made by the British Prime Minister that one could imagine a stronger relationship between the United Kingdom and Europe. Yes, the Parthenon sculptures will also be part of this discussion. This is not only an issue for Greece, it is an issue for Europe.”
