Kyriakos Mitsotakis sent a message of support for citizens facing the energy crisis in the wake of the government’s measures, speaking in Larissa at the opening of one of Europe’s largest electricity storage facilities.
The prime minister said “this winter will be difficult. Every escalation and strike in Hormuz and Ukraine is causing major disruption and a spiral of increases in oil and natural gas prices, international inflation and the cost of living”.
As he put it, “no country is an isolated ‘Gallic village’, far from the global storm. At national level, we are putting up as many defences as possible”.
He also referred to the government’s measures to address the energy crisis, saying that “a significant 30% increase in the heating allowance has been announced, taking it to as much as €1,200 for 1.2 million households, along with a reduction in the price of heating oil, which will open at €1.55. From today, subsidies continue both for diesel at the pump, at 40 cents per litre, and for motor fuels, with refineries continuing to contribute”.
Finally, the prime minister said the measures were fair and costed, and would be reviewed in line with international developments. “If the Greek economy were not in a position to generate surpluses, we would not be able to support society,” he concluded.
