The installation of a new, state-of-the-art digital angiography system at the University General Hospital of Larissa, worth more than €1m, marks an important step in upgrading healthcare services in Central Greece. The donation was made by HELLENiQ ENERGY through its subsidiary HELLENiQ Petroleum.
According to the relevant press release, the new angiography system significantly strengthens the hospital’s capacity for early diagnosis and interventional treatment of serious vascular conditions, including acute ischaemic strokes, brain aneurysms and vascular malformations.
The state-of-the-art equipment is in operation at the Radiology Department of the University General Hospital of Larissa and provides substantial support to the work of the Interventional Neuroradiology Unit, the only one of its kind in Central Greece.
The new angiography system was officially handed over on Wednesday, 14 October, in the presence of Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, Deputy Health Minister Marios Themistokleous, HELLENiQ ENERGY chief executive Andreas Siamisis and board chairman Spilios Livanos.
The initiative is part of the support programme HELLENiQ ENERGY provided in Thessaly following the devastating floods of 2023. The angiography system was installed and commissioned in close cooperation with all relevant bodies, to ensure that both the equipment and the installation site met the most up-to-date requirements.
Statements from the health minister and HELLENiQ ENERGY
Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis said: “I am here at the University Hospital of Larissa with my colleagues, the MPs for Larissa. We have just inaugurated the new state-of-the-art digital angiography system, donated by HELLENiQ ENERGY. This machine will save many lives by providing a service that until now was available only in Athens and Thessaloniki. From now on, it will also be available in Larissa and throughout Central Greece.
Together with medical and scientific staff, we can always raise the standard of the services we provide. Some people will be able to live better lives thanks to this machine, and that gives us great moral satisfaction. What matters is what you leave behind. And here, HELLENiQ ENERGY is leaving a truly positive mark that can make a difference to a great many people.”
HELLENiQ ENERGY chief executive Andreas Siamisis said: “By donating the new angiography system to the University General Hospital of Larissa, we are meeting a real need and improving access to specialist care for people in Thessaly, as well as for patients from Sterea and Central Greece and other regions.
Healthcare is a longstanding priority in our social contribution. In recent years, we have invested more than €16m in supporting the public healthcare system, an effort estimated to benefit more than 2.6 million people.
Our financial support provides essential tools and infrastructure for the highly skilled medical workforce our country has, enabling it to offer even better services to our fellow citizens. We always work with the state and the relevant bodies to ensure that our initiatives leave a meaningful, long-term mark on society.”
The inauguration was also attended by Secretary General for Health Services Lillian Venetia Vildiridi, the governor of the 5th Health Region of Thessaly and Central Greece, Fotis Seretis, the administrator of the University Hospital of Larissa, Mary Koutsioumba, and the hospital’s medical and nursing staff.
Better care for thousands of patients
The new digital angiography system enables blood vessels to be imaged simultaneously from two directions, providing high diagnostic accuracy and guidance for complex procedures. Among other procedures, it supports mechanical thrombectomy in selected cases of acute ischaemic stroke, as well as the endovascular treatment of aneurysms and vascular malformations. It can also be used in peripheral vascular procedures and cancer treatments.
Its installation upgrades the previous equipment, which had been in use for 12 years, and also strengthens the hospital’s educational and research role. The Group’s donation was carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, the hospital management and the 5th Health Region, which covered the cost of the necessary renovation and fit-out work at the installation site.
More than €16m for public healthcare over the past six years
Over the past six years alone, HELLENiQ ENERGY has provided more than €16m to support around 17 hospitals and primary healthcare facilities, benefiting 2.6 million people. According to a recent study by the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE), the measurable social value of these initiatives exceeds €83m.
The Group’s most significant initiatives include:
Providing more than €7m to support the National Health System during the pandemic.
Donating an angiography system to Evangelismos Hospital.
Upgrading the Paediatric Clinic at Mamatsio Hospital in Kozani and the 2nd University Pulmonology Clinic at Attikon Hospital.
