“We were born to be the opposition and an alternative to New Democracy in our political system. We filled that gap. We have never been in government with New Democracy. And our political record in relation to the Right is absolutely clear,” Alexis Tsipras said in his opening remarks at today’s meeting of the Political Committee of ELAS.
“However hard they tried to smear us, our people remember the 2015-19 government as ‘the first time the Left was in power’. It was a government that, beyond its battle with the troika and the bailout memoranda, introduced progressive reforms: citizenship for the children of immigrants born in Greece; gender identity; resolution of the Macedonia issue; and a series of positive labour reforms.”
“So I don’t believe there is a citizen in this country who thinks it likely that I would be in the same government as Mr Mitsotakis. And not just Mr Mitsotakis, but also Pierrakakis, Dendias, Hatzidakis, Venizelos or Stournaras, to be frank.
The Right and we are on paths that can never converge. Let’s not labour the point. Others, though, need to take another look at their straight and zigzag lines.”
