Sklavenitis is nearing its entry into Mykonos, according to sources familiar with the matter, with work on the chain’s first store in Ano Mera in full swing. The new supermarket is expected to open its doors in November, the same sources said, marking the entry of the biggest player in Greece’s grocery market into one of the country’s most challenging and expensive islands.
Other sources say there are plans for a second store in Mykonos, although neither its location nor the timetable for its opening has been disclosed.
The choice of Ano Mera is no coincidence. The area is one of the island’s most important retail centres. In effect, it is a commercial hotspot within the country’s best-known tourist hotspot.
Euro2day.gr reported as early as last June that the chain was planning to enter the island. At the time, market sources pointed to the possibility of an entry through an acquisition, although the company had not officially confirmed this.
Mykonos is a highly competitive market, where AB Vassilopoulos has a strong presence, alongside the BAZAAR, OK! Markets and My Market Local chains.
The best-known local brand is Flora supermarket, part of whose network was acquired by MARKET IN. Other local operators include Vrisi Market Mykonos, ORNOS MARKET MON. IKE, Lykos Market Mykonos, Nikiforos Market and others.
