The restoration of the listed Matthaiou residence and roller mill complex in Naousa, including the conservation of its historic machinery and its conversion into a multi-purpose venue for cultural and educational activities, has been included in the NSRF’s Environment and Climate Change 2021-2027 programme, following a decision by Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance Nikos Papathanasis. The project has a total public budget of €3,409,760.
The project includes restoration work on the existing disused building, a unique monument that has been designated a “work of art”.
The roller mill’s machinery will be conserved and showcased using modern techniques that will ensure it is preserved and restored to its original condition, with particular emphasis on its historical significance.
In particular, construction work will be carried out on the 1,121 sq m building to restore and upgrade its infrastructure, including demolition, painting, structural support, masonry, plastering, ceilings, floors, finishes and insulation, among other works. Mechanical and electrical work will also be undertaken, including heating and air-conditioning, fire protection, water supply and drainage, lightning protection and a lift.
The procurement of exhibition equipment, to be carried out in accordance with a museological and museographic study, will also include special exhibition structures.
Once the work is complete, the venue will be open to visitors throughout the year. It will host events, conferences and cultural activities, with the participation and collaboration of residents and organisations from the wider area.
The aim is for the venue to become a hub for knowledge, education and research into local history.
The beneficiary of the project is the Municipality of the Heroic City of Naousa, and the project is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
