Respect for the sovereignty of all European Union member states is required, the German government said, stressing that maritime zones must be delimited in accordance with applicable international law.
This is the “firm position” of the Berlin government, which it will communicate and set out to all those involved, a German Foreign Ministry spokesperson said in response to a question from ERT.
“Since 2019, we have made clear, and reiterated in 2025, that Turkey must respect the sovereignty and sovereign rights of all EU member states, and that maritime zones must be delimited in accordance with applicable international law,” Kathrin Deschauer said.
“The position of the EU and of the German government, as an EU member state, is absolutely clear: maritime zones must be delimited — this naturally applies to the Mediterranean as well — in accordance with the applicable international law of the sea.
And, in particular, with the participation of all affected coastal states,” the German Foreign Ministry spokesperson stressed.
“Our EU partners have our solidarity on this issue,” she stressed.
“Our position is very clear, and we will certainly take the opportunity to discuss it with all those involved,” Ms Deschauer said.
Asked by ERT whether Germany would support possible EU sanctions against Libya, the German Foreign Ministry spokesperson said the issue was premature and referred to the conclusions of the EU Council in December 2019.
“That is a very clear position of the EU and the German government,” Ms Deschauer said, “and of course we will discuss everything else within the EU framework.”.
