Alexis Tsipras, president of the Hellenic Left Coalition (ELAS), says in a post that he will recommend a film every Saturday as a way of commenting on current affairs. His pick for this week is Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘The Godfather’.
The ELAS president’s post reads:
“Have you heard the phrase ‘You don’t even see this in the movies’?
And yet, current affairs often bring us news and events that resemble a film plot. So, prompted by current affairs, every Saturday I’ll recommend a film instead of commenting on them. Any resemblance to real people and situations is purely coincidental.
Is it?” he asks, before adding that “the past week has brought some very interesting news”.
He then lists some of the headlines:
- “A massive tax-evasion case has been launched involving a major restaurant chain”
- “Allegations of interference in refereeing, bribery and match-fixing in Greek basketball”
- “A company belonging to New Democracy MP Spyros Koulkoudinas has received a €200,000 subsidy to develop a marine tourism business in Pieria”.
In light of all this, he concludes, “I can only recommend Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather. Enjoy the film!”
