The Minister for the Environment and Energy, Stavros Papastavrou, made the following statement as he arrived at the European Union Energy Council in Brussels this morning:
“Today, at the Energy Council, we are discussing energy security for the coming winter, network charges and the EU’s targets beyond 2030. Greece’s position is clear. We need the necessary flexibility within the framework of the escape clause to introduce targeted, temporary support measures now. These measures will reduce energy costs for households and businesses, providing meaningful support to citizens.”
“The long-term energy mix is essential. But in times of crisis, such as now, it must be accompanied by immediate measures with a measurable impact on energy bills.”
“We will also discuss electricity interconnections. I will update my counterparts on the progress made in implementing the Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnection, as well as on the next steps. This is a project of strategic importance for Europe, moving forward according to plan and with determination, always in accordance with international law and the law of the sea. It will end Cyprus’s energy isolation.”
“We have a duty to build an energy union that includes all member states and delivers tangible benefits to all citizens. Thank you.”
