By decision of Deputy Minister for National Economy and Finance Nikos Papathanasis, the project “Construction of a new Correctional Facility in the Municipality of Megalopoli”, with a budget of €39.9 million, has been included in the Special Programme for Just Development Transition under the National Development Programme (NDP) 2021-2025.
The modern correctional facility will have infrastructure offering different levels of security and will include production, educational and craft/agricultural units to support inmates’ social reintegration.
The project’s budget covers the full cost of constructing the buildings and infrastructure, including building works, electromechanical installations and security systems, as well as the cost of the preparatory work required to implement the project.
Creating a modern, functional correctional facility in the Megalopoli area will make a decisive contribution to addressing the country’s longstanding problem of prison overcrowding. At the same time, it will create new employment opportunities during both construction and operation of the facility, combining social effectiveness with development benefits.
