With profits of €2.6 million, cash holdings of more than €11 million and no bank debt, the Thanopoulos supermarket chain continues to strengthen its position in the market, pursuing a different strategy from the large chains.
The family-owned business in the northern suburbs follows a “conservative” policy, focusing on its existing network, increasing profitability and investing in property.
Its latest move was the purchase of a commercial building on Thivaidos Street in Kifissia, completed after the close of the 2025 financial year.
According to financial statements published in the General Commercial Register (GEMI), D. Thanopoulos SA’s revenue rose by 5.2% last year to €57.41 million. Pre-tax profits increased by 8.4% to €3.4 million, while net profits came to €2.63 million, up from €2.43 million.
Thanopoulos’ gross profit margin widened to 23.74%, from 22.69% in 2024, while its net margin came to 4.58%. For every €100 in sales, the company earns €4.60 in net profit.
The strongest feature of the balance sheet is liquidity. At the end of 2025, Thanopoulos held €11.44 million in cash and cash equivalents, up from €9.27 million, including about €2.16 million in term deposits.
At the same time, the company has no bank debt, while its equity rose to €10.76 million from €8.13 million. According to management, its strong cash position allows it to pay suppliers faster and take advantage of trade discounts, strengthening its competitiveness.
It is also investing in electric vehicles for home deliveries and a photovoltaic installation to power its stores. For this year, management forecasts sales growth of 3.5%-4%, equivalent to revenue of €59.4 million-€59.7 million.
