2027 vehicle circulation tax: How the penalties are calculated
Late payment incurs a tiered penalty, depending on when the tax is paid. The penalty increases the further payment is delayed beyond the original deadline, eventually reaching 100% of the tax due.

|---|
| By 31 December 2026 | No penalty |
| January 2027 | 25% |

| From 1 March 2027 | 100% |

| January 2027 | €240 | €60 | €300 |
| February 2027 | €240 | €120 | €360 |

It is worth noting that passenger cars with vehicle circulation tax of less than €30 are subject to a minimum penalty of €30.
How vehicle circulation tax is calculated
The amount of tax varies from one vehicle to another, depending on its date of first registration and technical specifications.
For cars first registered in Greece or abroad by 31 October 2010, the tax is calculated on the basis of engine capacity.
For vehicles first registered from 1 November 2010 onwards, the key factor is carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. Different tax bands apply, depending on the period in which the vehicle was first registered.
No changes to the existing calculation bands have been announced for the 2027 tax. In any case, the exact amount due is shown on each vehicle’s notice on the myCAR platform.
How to avoid vehicle tax by declaring a vehicle off the road online
Owners who do not intend to use their vehicle during 2027 can declare it off the road online through the myCAR platform, without having to hand in the number plates in person at the relevant tax office, provided they meet the prescribed conditions.
To avoid having to pay the 2027 annual vehicle circulation tax, the declaration that the vehicle is off the road must be submitted by 31 December 2026.
While the vehicle is declared off the road, it must remain at the private parking space registered on the platform and may not be driven on public roads.
If an owner decides to put the vehicle back on the road during 2027, they can apply to lift its off-road status and pay the pro-rata tax for the period of use, subject to the current rules.
